You may need to change or renew your study permit while studying in Canada. In this situation, it is good to know that maintaining legal status in Canada is a serious process.
Maintaining Status in Canada
If you are applying for a change of situation, you should be sure that you have not exceeded your authorized stay in Canada. In addition, you must always follow all the existing rules, such as the condition of limitations like work, maximum working hours per week, and duration of the study.
If you are renewing your study permit or changing your status after your current situation has expired, you must leave Canada before submitting your return application.
In this case, you must keep a copy of the documents that prove you have applied for the renewal of the study permit (the postal tracking code of the letter you sent, the documents you received from the postman, or the online receipt.).
This law is only for your temporary residence requests. If you lose your status in Canada because you did not meet the requirements of your study permit, you have 90 days to try to restore your status.
Changing or Renewing the Study Permit
If your educational permit expires before completing the study program, you must apply for the renewal of the academic permission before the expiration of the current educational authorization. It is best to submit your application at least 30 days before the current license expires. You can send your request online or by mail.
If you are studying in Quebec, you may need to obtain a Certificat d’Acceptance du Quebec/Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ); because you always need a CAQ to get a study permit in Quebec.
University Change
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) acknowledges that students will not be required to obtain a new study permit to transfer between educational institutions, study programs, or study levels and can transmit as long as their study permit is valid.
